There’s something pretty special about this time of year on the South Coast. The air shifts and just beyond the horizon, one of nature’s greatest migrations begins. And this year, it’s set to be bigger than ever...
Each year, humpback whales make their way from Antarctica to the warmer waters of the north, travelling right past the NSW coastline along what’s known as the “Humpback Highway”.
In 2026, it’s expected to be a standout season with Marine Scientists estimating that more than 50,000 humpback whales will migrate along the east coast this year. It’s an incredible conservation success story - and one you can experience right here on the South Coast.
From May through to November, whales migrate past our coastline, often surprisingly close to shore here in Ulladulla.
Some of the best local vantage points are just a short drive from Cupitt’s:
- Warden Head Lighthouse- sweeping ocean views and one of the region’s most reliable spotting points
- Blackburn Headland- a quieter lookout loved by locals where you can often watch whales pass in peace as you sit on the grass hill
Early in the season, whales are heading north with purpose and it definitely feels like they are on a highway. Later in the year, they return south with their calves - moving slower, lingering longer, and putting on the kind of displays that stop you in your tracks.
One of the best things about whale season here is how easy it is to experience - whether you stay on land or head out onto the water.
If you’re feeling adventurous,Woebegone Diveoffers unforgettable swim-with-the-whales experiences, giving you a rare chance to observe these giants in their natural environment.
For a more classic experience,Jervis Bay Wildruns whale watching cruises departing from Huskisson, getting you up close as the whales breach, tail slap, and glide past.
Another option a little further down the coast isBatemans Bay Wildwho run cruises out of the Clyde River at Batemans Bay. You'll explore the rich ecosystem of the Tollgate Islands, showcasing whales, dolphins, and abundant sea life and seabird life along the Eurobodalla Coast.
Make a getaway of it and slow things right down with a stay in one of our private villas at Cupitt’s - where vineyard views, coastal air, and long, unhurried mornings set the tone for your getaway.
